Batteries: keep them cool
While it may seem to work perfectly, all may not be well with your battery. This blog relates to the 12-volt lead-acid batteries that are fitted to virtually every motorcar. Surprisingly, they degrade in high temperatures. Yet, drivers tend not to notice their batteries' weakened states, until the first cold snap arrives in late autumn.
Why do batteries degrade in summer?
Batteries cannot last forever, because their acid electrolyte attacks the lead-based plates within the plastic case. This chemical reaction increases with temperature, leading to an accelerated reduction in battery capacity. Higher temperatures also increase internal gassing and electrolyte loss, which make things worse. Should there be a fault with the charging system, or the car covers journeys lasting fewer than 20 minutes between restarts, the resultant undercharging could make things worse.
What can you do?
Attempt to minimise under-bonnet temperatures as much as you can, such as parking in the shade, if practical - preferably not under trees, the sap from which can damage your paintwork. If the battery has been replaced at any time in the car's life, ensure that any protective heat shields have been refitted. We have come across cases, where they have been discarded, because they are not seen to be of any use. This is far from true.
Otherwise, if you conduct mainly short journeys, do not forget that the battery can become discharged very easily, even in warm conditions. Lengthening battery life, by topping up its charge levels with a mains-powered smart charger, is always a good idea. Should you be more confident, checking that the connections are secure and the battery is installed firmly, are further worthwhile checks. Consider also that many
garages offer free battery checks and so it is worth knowing if your battery is due for replacement before the winter.
