Who is GEM?

GEM Motoring Assist is a members’ motoring and road safety organisation based in the UK. Our aim is to keep our members on the move… whether that’s through our breakdown recovery service or our motoring and road safety expertise.

Our vision is to be recognised as the leading and most trusted provider of award-winning, value for money breakdown recovery services and be industry leaders in road safety, as well as a trusted source of motoring information for our members and beyond.

Celebrating 90 years of GEM - keeping you on the move since 1932

Established in 1932, we celebrate our 90th anniversary throughout 2022 including a radio advert, a Voices from the Road podcast presented by Valerie Singleton OBE, a nostalgic scrapbook looking at previous editions of our long-standing members magazine, Good Motoring and a pledge to donate 90p to the GEM Road Safety Charity for every new member recruited.

A short history of GEM Motoring Assist

A commitment to reducing casualties and to keeping everyone safe on the road was the reason GEM came into being in 1932. Now, 90 years later, that commitment is as strong as ever.

GEM was founded in 1932 as the Company of Veteran Motorists, a club to encourage care, courtesy and concentration on the roads, against a backdrop of rising fatal and serious collisions. In that same year, a shocking 6,667 people lost their lives in road crashes.

In 1978 the organisation launched its breakdown recovery service and 1983 changed its name to the Guild of Experienced Motorists (GEM for short). Since then, GEM has enjoyed repeated success as an award-winning provider of breakdown recovery services.
