Booking your driving theory and practical test
In order to begin enjoying the freedom of driving your own car, you'll need to book - and pass - both your driving theory test and driving practical test.
Here's an at-a-glance guide to booking these tests, each taking you one step closer to obtaining your licence.
How to book car theory test
You cannot take the practical driving test until you have passed the driving theory test.
Before we cover how to book theory driving test, in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) you'll need a provisional driving licence. You'll also need to have lived in England, Scotland, or Wales for 185 days in the previous 12 months. Theory test: Online booking
Book your theory test on the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) website. You'll need to provide:
● UK driving licence number
● Valid email address
● credit or debit card information to pay the exam fee
● Your name
● Your address
● Your phone number
Having provided this information, you can choose a local test centre, and book a date and time for your test. You'll then receive an email confirming the test details - keep this for reference.
DVLA: booking a theory test cost?
You'll need to pay £23 to take the theory test. While people often search for the ‘DVLA theory test’, the service actually falls under the DVSA.
How far ahead can I book my theory test?
You can book your theory test up to six weeks in advance. It's advisable to book your theory test as soon as you feel you are ready. Be aware that popular test centres can get booked up quickly, so don't leave it until the last minute.
If there is a backlog at your preferred test centre, be sure to visit the DVSA website regularly because people do cancel their appointments.
What is the minimum age to take the theory test?
In the UK, you must be 17 years old to take the theory test. That said, it's possible to apply for your provisional in the three months before your birthday.
On the day of your theory test: Driving licence required
Bring your provisional licence to the theory test centre, along with email confirmation of the test.
When can I book my practical test?
You can book your practical driving test once you have:
● Obtained your provisional licence
● Passed your theory test (within the last 2 years)
● Reached the age of 17
You'll also need to have been living in England, Scotland or Wales for 185 days within the last 12 months, and have a credit/debit card to pay the test fee.
Find a suitable test centre
Look around your local area for test centres. Find out what kind of tests it offers; its location; and average test wait times.
Talk to your instructor
Your driving instructor will be able to advise on whether or not you are ready to take your practical test. Of course, you do not need to follow their advice, but it may be wise to do so.
How much is a practical test?
A practical test normally costs £62, rising to £75 if it is booked for a weekend, evening, or bank holiday.
How long will the test take?
The exam should take under an hour. Your examiner will tell you if you've passed or not after the exam.
Changes and cancellations
You can change your test date up to 10 times (3 working days' notice required), or cancel it (3 working days’ notice also required in order to get a full refund).
